Dear National Coordinators,
The health crisis we are experiencing has shaken up our reference points and given us food for thought. More than ever, we must fight against withdrawal and teach or reteach our youth TO LISTEN TO SEE BETTER.
To listen in order to see better, to understand others better, to understand the world better.
This is the objective of the International Competition "When Sound Creates Image! "created in 2018 at the initiative of The Week of Sound.
From a short original music composed this year by the composer Gabriel Yared, the students are invited to create a short film, without modifying it, but with complete freedom in the image techniques used (live action, animation, ...). Take the time to listen to this music and to register for the Competition by clicking
Thus, this Competition does not only appeal to the creative dimension of the young people, but, much more, it leads them to open to understand. Depending on the individuals and their cultures, the same sound composition will be interpreted differently: this Competition has a strong societal dimension where the invitation to intercultural dialogue is omnipresent.
As you will have understood, sound carries the image, sound creates the image, and the objective of this Competition is to bring students to listen in order to see better, well beyond simple creation. Through education in image and sound, in its relationship to creation, students are led to develop capacities for understanding and analysis that go far beyond the film object: these capacities will enable them to better grasp their environment, to better understand others, in all their differences and uniqueness, and to be enriched by these differences.
With the international dimension of this Competition, the UNESCO Associated Schools Network and The Week of Sound wish to convey the diversity, as well as the richness of the visions that a single soundtrack can create. This international dimension is a pedagogical tool to address with students the multiplicity of cultures and their impact on the short films produced from the same starting point.
Last year, we had already launched a call for entries and the Herculano Secondary School in Porto, Portugal, received a special mention at the Jury's award ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters on 22 January 2021. (see Newsletter n°15 of February 2021).
This year, we hope that many of you will take part in the Competition. To this end, we will organise information sessions by videoconference on 24 and 25 June: you will thus be able to fully understand the pedagogical and societal stakes and the interest of getting your schools to register for this Competition.
A second email will be sent to you with all the information you need to register for this Competition: who, how, why...
The winners of this Competition will be rewarded with cheques during the 19th edition of “The Week of Sound of UNESCO", from 17 to 23 January 2022.
Come to this Competition, bring your students to learn to listen to see the world better!
Stay connected, stay safe!
